Why aren’t those breakaway tires on tractor trailers illegal?
Those huge chunks of rubber in the middle of the highway are dangerous. When they do damage someone’s car or cause an accident no one is accountable. Considering the danger this imposes, shouldn’t breakaway tires be outlawed no matter how “cost effective” they are?
There is no such thing as a “breakaway” tire. Most of the time what you are seeing is a tread from a re-capped tire that has separated from the tire casing. Sometimes however even a virgin ( non re-capped ) tire will come apart.
There Have been numerous studies on this subject and the conclusion has always been that with proper tire maintenance a re-capped tire is just as safe as a virgin tire.
The main cause for tire separation is excessive heat build up in the tire. The main cause of excessive heat build up is under inflation. Many truck drivers and trucking companies check their tires by kicking or “thumping” them. The only proper and foolproof way to check a tire is with an air pressure gage.
So the answer to your question is that, the tire is not the culprit, the tire maintenance is.
Also to correct a previous post, re-capped tires are legal on any axle of a tractor trailer except the steering axle.
