how do you determine polarity of an electronic device?
I have a treadmill that takes a 12v 1000ma adapter but the manual, nor the devise itself (or calling customer service)indicates the polarity of the adapter. Is there a way to determine polarity with a multitester or some other tool? I have a radio shack adjustable adapter but need to know how to set the polarity to avoid damagng the electrical components.
THX1138, Thanks for the response. I’m not so hot with the multimeter. Can you give me a more detailed explaination of how to test. What to set the meter on; The recepticle for the adapter is so small, which probes do I need to touch where in the recpeticle. Hell, I dont even think I can get both probes in there.
No.. polarity is critical.. The polarity can be determined with a voltmeter, [aka DMM, multimeter]. A positive reading will indicate the + [positive] terminal, [of which the red probe is touching]…
